Misdiagnosis

Medical misdiagnosis is commonly the result of a physician's failure to meet the standards of care, skill and prudence in their field. A misdiagnosis may include a completely wrong diagnosis, a failure to properly identify the subtype of a condition or an underlying cause of a condition.

A misdiagnosis may involve the physician diagnosing a patient with a completely wrong diagnosis. Here, the patient may have a similar condition to the valid diagnosis, a completely different condition, or no condition at all. This is most common in cases involving rare diseases, asymptomatic conditions or digestive conditions.

Additionally, a doctor may make a misdiagnosis by failing to properly identify the subtype of a patient's condition. With certain medical conditions such as diabetes and heart disease the correct identification of the conditions subtype is essential to ensure that the patient receives proper treatment.

Finally, a misdiagnosis may occur due to a physician's failure to identify the underlying cause of a condition or a secondary condition. When an underlying cause or condition is overlooked the patient may receive an incorrect treatment allowing the condition to worsen. Additionally, if a secondary condition such as an allergy to certain medications is overlooked the physician can cause severe injury to the patient by prescribing an incorrect medication.
